Documents Required for Japan Study Visa (Updated 2025)

Studying in Japan is one of the best opportunities for Nepali students who dream of building a successful future through world-class education and international exposure. Japan offers excellent academic standards, part-time work opportunities, and a safe living environment. However, before you can begin your journey, you need to prepare the correct documents for the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and student visa application.

1. Certificate of Eligibility (COE) Application Documents

Before applying for your visa, your Japanese language school must apply for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) at Japan Immigration. For this process, you will need to prepare the following:
 

Personal Documents

 i. Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)

 ii. Birth certificate

 iii. Citizenship certificate (English translation if needed)

 iv. Recently taken passport-size photographs (white background)


Academic Documents

 i. Academic transcripts and certificates (SLC/SEE, +2, bachelor’s if applicable)

 ii. Character certificate from your last school or college

 iii. Japanese language certificate (if available, JLPT/NAT/JLCT etc.)


Financial Documents

 i. Bank balance certificate (minimum balance as per school requirement)

 ii. Bank statement (6 months minimum)

 iii. Income certificate from local government

 iv. Relationship certificate (if sponsor is a parent or guardian)

 v. Occupation proof of the sponsor (job certificate, business registration, etc.)


2. New Requirement (2025): TB Clearance Certificate

As per the latest guidelines from Japan Immigration (Osaka, Tokyo, Nagoya, and other regional offices), applicants must submit a Tuberculosis (TB) Clearance Certificate during the COE application process.
 
This certificate must show that the applicant is free from active tuberculosis, ensuring public health and safety before entering Japan.

 

TB Certificate Details:

 i. Must be issued within 3 months before COE submission

 ii. Should include applicant’s full name, test date, result (Negative/No TB detected), doctor’s name, and hospital seal

 iii. Must be in English or attached with an official English translation

 iv. Accepted tests: Chest X-ray or TB blood/skin test 


3. Visa Application Documents (After COE Approval)

 
Once your COE is granted, you’ll need the following for your visa submission at the Embassy of Japan in Nepal:
 

 i. Original COE and copy

 ii. Valid passport

 iii. Visa application form (provided by the embassy)

 iv. Recent passport-size photo

 vi. Admission letter from the Japanese school

 vii. TB Clearance Certificate (if requested again)
