Main and Most Famous Japanese Dishes

 

1. Sushi and Sashimi

  • Sushi: This is prepared by combining rice (Sushi Rice), which is seasoned with vinegar, with raw or cooked fish, seafood, or vegetables. It is Japan's most iconic dish.
  • Sashimi: This is a dish consisting of any fish, without rice, sliced into very thin pieces and eaten with soy sauce and Wasabi. The freshness and quality of the fish are paramount in Sashimi.

2. Ramen

Ramen is a noodle soup that is extremely popular in Japan.

  • Features: It is made with wheat noodles, a thick broth (made from meat or bones), and various toppings (such as pork (Chashu), boiled egg, and seaweed).

3. Tempura

This is made by lightly dipping seafood or vegetables into a delicate batter and deep-frying them until crispy.

  • Features: Its batter must be very light, and it is often eaten with salt or a light sauce called Tentsuyu.

4. Teriyaki

Teriyaki is a cooking style where fish (like salmon) or meat (like chicken) is repeatedly brushed (glazed) with a mixture of soy sauce, Mirin, sugar, and Sake while being cooked.

5. Udon and Soba

  • Udon: Thick noodles made from wheat flour. It is eaten in a hot or cold broth.
  • Soba: Thin noodles made from buckwheat flour. This is also eaten in a hot broth or chilled, by dipping the noodles.

  • Main Staple: The main staple of Japanese food is Rice. White rice is eaten with almost every meal.
  • Miso Soup: This soup, made from Miso Paste (which is produced by fermenting soybeans), is also included with every main meal.
  • Tofu: Tofu, made from soybeans, is also used in many dishes and is a good source of protein.
